The Bowersock Mills & Power Company operates the only operating hydroelectric plant in Kansas, in business since 1874. The plant is comprised of 11 hydroelectric turbines capable of producing 7 MW of environmentally friendly energy, and provides the City of Lawrence with river flow control for public water intakes. It is certified as a Low Impact Hydropower Facility and offers public tours.
